Gedung Negara Grahadi (Grahadi Governor's Mansion) |
To do sightseeing in Surabaya, tourist can find many historical places which are the remnants of colonial period. Gedung Negara Grahadi is one the buildings having historical value.
The name Grahadi is derived from a conference hall inside the building. Graha in Sanskrit means House, while Adi signifies distinguished. "Distinguished" is the right description for this elegant and carefully preserved building. The building is a particularly fine example of "Dutch Tropical" architecture of the colonial period. Like the other building of its period elsewhere in Indonesia which managed to survive the post- independence penchant for modernism and indonesianization. Grahadi is a solid and handsome structure characterized by strong, clean and well proportioned vertical and horizontal lines.
