Booked this hotel as I was having trouble
booking other hotels in Phnom Penh as they don't provide a website. I was
thinking of booking Kambuja Inn in the first place... which was a great pick
actually. One of a few remaining Phnom Penh hotels located in a cluster of old
French shop houses (at 8-10 Street 174 to be exact), the quaint little inn is
tucked in the quieter side of Norodom Boulevard, yet it's centrally located...
just a few blocks from the most happening nightlife strip: Street 51, and
within walking distance to Sorya Market and Phsar Thmey (Central Market).
However I couldn't contact the inn directly, so I had to choose another hotel
to suit my walking tour.
Golden Mekong Hotel flashed into my mind due to its great location. I avoided main tourist cluster of hotels/tuk-tuks/touts along the river and picked this clean decent hotel instead. The old French town house which had been converted with care, the hotel is located right behind the Royal Palace (hotel faces the rear wall), next to the Art School, National Museum, and close to the Mekong Delta and Wat Phnom. For this central part of town, the rooms are a real steal... USD 20/night for a deluxe twin-bed room with AC, TV, fridge, hot shower and private bathroom, minus breakfast. I got a ground floor room with traditional wooden beds. The bathroom had great water pressure. Overall I had nothing to complain, except for the fridge which didn't work because the plug was broken. However it was OK, no big deal. I only needed a decent place to lay my head at night since I'd be spending most of my time roaming Central Phnom Penh.
Just around the corner is a strip of high end expat-oriented cafes. Fusion cuisine is fine, however I decided to leave it for next time. This was my first visit to Phnom Penh, and I'd rather go local.. eat like Phnom Penh-ites. There are lotta lotta street snacks and local eateries along Street 19 and surroundings. Golden Mekong Hotel definitely played a great deal in making my walking tour a pleasant experience.

Traditional Facade |
The hotel provides transfer service from bus
station for USD 3/tuk-tuk and airport pick-up/transfer for USD 10/car.
Tuk-tuk in Phnom Penh can be quite annoying, so will be a good idea to book a tuk-tuk beforehand.
