Zhuhai 珠海 lit. "Pearl Sea" is a prefecture-level city on the southern
coast of Guangdong province in the People's Republic of China. Zhuhai
borders the Macau Special Administrative Region (north and west), and
140 km southwest of Guangzhou. Mandarin is the official language and
nearly everyone understands it. However, Cantonese is widely used.
From
Taipa Island, Macau, we took a public bus across Friendship Bridge
towards Macau Peninsula, where Portas de Cerco/The Barrier Gate ( 關閘
guan1zha2 ), the main border crossing between Macau and Mainland China
is situated. We'd cross the border by foot and entered Zhuhai, Mainland
China. Strolling through the immigration and custom checkpoint and
finally we found ourselves in the hustle bustle of Gongbei Port of Entry
拱北口岸. Crossing this border can take quite a long time especially at
weekends. There is a large underground shopping mall under the plaza
north of the port-of-entry building. It was a rainy day and we had no
clue where to grab the bus-ticket to Guilin. Roamed through the
underground shopping mall for a while, we found Kee Kwan Bus Station (
歧關車站 qi2guan1 che1zhan4 ). There is a baggage deposit service there if
you want to leave behind all your backpacks and breeze along the
shopping malls. I found a great restaurant, and had a bowl of delicious
noodle for my lunch. Too bad didn't write down the name of restaurant,
but from the nonstop streaming of customers, I can tell it's one of the
must-try eateries around there. We even had to share the table with
other customers!
Too bad the joy didn't last long. We found out
that we landed at the wrong bus station. No bus departs for Guilin from
Kee Kwan Bus Station. We should walk back to Gongbei Port 拱北口岸, crossed
the slippery plaza and searched for Xinhe Bus Station 信禾拱北通大客運站. This
time it was easy since the huge Xinhe red signboard could be spotted
even from afar :) At last we were able to grab the sleeper-bus ticket
for CNY 120 / person. (exchange rate at Rp. 1.715,-) But trouble was far
from over. The sleeper bus to Guilin didn't depart from here, but from
Xiangzhou Long Distance Bus Station 香洲長途站 EDT 20.12. How the hell we
gonna reach that place? Luckily the officer were kind enough to let us
hop in their affiliated bus and off they drove us to Xiangzhou Bus
Station. Close shave!!! Took us 13 hours traveling from Zhuhai to Guilin. It was a
long... long journey.
