Marking George Town & Street Art, Day 1 (2014, June 24)

George Town World Heritage Site, Penang, Malaysia

THe UNESCO World Heritage Site is divided into two sections, the Core Area and Buffer Zone. Total Land Area: 259.42 ha.

Buffer Zone, 150.04 ha
The Core Zone is protected by 150.04 hectares of Buffer Zone bounded by the sea, Jalan Transfer on the west and Jalan Dr. Lim Chwee Leong and Gat Jalan Prangin on the southwest.

Core Area, 109.38 ha
The Core Zone covers an area of 109.38 hectares, and contains more than 1,700 buildings. It is bounded by a coastline along the north and wast, and by Love Lane to the northwest and and Gat Lebuh Melayu, Lorong Carnavon and Lebuh Carnavon to the southwest corner.

While everybody flocks around major tourist attractions, I'm more than happy to march to the beat of a different drum.. Take an amazing tour by foot, around George Town to discover the unique wrought-iron caricatures with anecdotal descriptions of the streets that they adorn. So let's go, let it rip!!!

I depart from my hotel @ Lebuh Muntri and my first finding is the "Budget Hotel" wrought iron caricature @ the intersection of Lebuh Chulia and Love Lane. At the turn of the last century, many shophouses were turned into cheap hotels, making this internationally-known tourist strip very popular with backpackers. I have a hands-on experience at one of this budget hotels and I must say it worths my money.

Next finding, "Ting Ting Thong" @ the intersection of Lorong Seck Chuan and Lebuh Chulia.

"Ting Ting Thong". One of the favourite foods sold at Seck Chuan Lane is "ting ting thong" or rock candy, a hardened mixture of sugar, sesame seeds, and nuts loved by kids. It has to be "chiselled" and "hammered" to break it into smaller biteable pieces.

Next is "Procession" @ the intersection of Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Cannon, just across Tua Pek Kong Temple. The Tua Pek Kong Hneoh Grand Float Procession is held in the Year of the Tiger to wash away bad luck and bring great wealth and health.

I suspect from the load of  people that The Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul Ice Kacang is somewhere near me.
