The National Mosque (Masjid Negara) is an architectural tribute to Islam, the official religion of Malaysia. Situated on 13 acres, the mosque houses a central courtyard measuring 153 square feet and a tower with over 245 steps The ground laying ceremonyawas officiated by the Yang Dipertuan Agong, or King od Malaysia, His Majesty Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamallulail, on 27 February 1963 (3 Syawal 1983 in the Muslim calendar). Two years later, His Majesty solemnised the official opening of the mosque on 27 August 1965 (29 Rabiulakhir 1385). Accommodating up to 15,000 worshippers during prayers, the mosque houses a library, offices, and a mausoleum for the nation's heroes. It was initially designed by the Public Works Department and was restored and upgraded in 2003 through the generous donation of the Albukhary Foundation.
