Guilin, Elephant Trunk Hill (2009, Apr 19)

Elephant Trunk Hill 象鼻山 stands majestically in the downtown area of Guilin city, at the junction of the Li River 漓江 and the Peach Blossom River 桃花江. The name was chosen because the hill looks like a giant elephant dipping its trunk into the river. The green water of Li River in front of it and the clear spring at the foot make Elephant Trunk Hill one of the most famous hills in Guilin City .

Elephant Trunk Hill is regarded as the symbol of Guilin . Originally named "Li Hill", "Yi Hill" and "Chenshui Hill", the hill is 3.6 hundred million years old. The hill towers 55m above the Li River, measuring 108m in length and 100m in width and has an elevation of 200m above sea level.

The Elephant Hill has several features: - Water Moon Cave 水月洞, Elephant's Eye Stone, and Puxian Pagoda 普賢塔 and Yunfeng Temple 雲峰寺.

Water Moon Cave is at the riverside with water of Li River flowing through. It looks like a full moon floating on the surface of the water with the moonlight reflected on the waves. Over 70 inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties were found on the walls in and around this cave, praising the beauty of hills and waters nearby.

On top of the hill stands a pagoda named Puxian Pagoda. Built in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), it looks like the handle of a sword. There are many carvings and inscriptions inside and outside the cave. The most well-known one is a poem by Lu You (1125-1210), one of the four great poets of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).

Elephant Trunk Hill and Water Moon Cave.

The shape of the hill is just like a huge elephant drinking water from the river with its trunk. Water Moon Cave is between the trunk and the legs, which is a semi-round cave with water flowing through. The most impressive is said to be the water reflection of a moon-like cave when the moonlight sprinkles over the river, hence the name 'Moon over the Water'.

Another cave regarded as the eyes of the elephant lies in the hillside. It provides tourists an ideal position to enjoy the panoramic view of Guilin.

Puxian Pagoda

On the top of Elephant Trunk Hill is a two-storey pagoda built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) surrounded by green trees. The pagoda looks like a precious vase on the back of an elephant.

Fubo Hill

Fubo Hill is on the west bank of the Li River. It is partially submerged in the river and partially above ground. It was named after a famous general called Fu bo in Han Dynasty who had ever made a battle in this area. There is another story to say that because the waves run back wherever they meet the blocks thus it gets the name. There are many scenic spots like Pearl-Returning Cave, One-Thousand-Buddhas Cave, Sword Testing Stone, Listening-to-the-Waves Pavilion and One-Thousand-Persons Pot and Big Iron Clock.
