Macau City (2009, Apr 25-26)

A half and hour last ferryboat ride (22.30) from Hongkong China Ferry Terminal, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hongkong, we reached Macau Marine Ferry Terminal past midnight. Macau Marine Ferry Terminal, also known as Hongkong-Macau Ferry Pier 港澳碼頭, Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal, New Macau Ferry Terminal 澳門新口岸外港客運碼頭 and Terminal Marítimo do Porto Exterior in Portuguese, is located in Porto Exterior, east coast of Macau Peninsula, near the reservoir on Avenida da Amizade. It is the main ferry terminal of Macau.

Again, the kind-hearted Mr. Nice Guy was there to pick us up. In a misty hazy chilly late evening, we dragged our trolley bags and strolled along the Outer Harbor Reservoir (Reservatório do Porto Exterior) on our way to the guesthouse. Stopped now and then to take a rest on concrete benches along the reservoir. The surrounding area is quite cozy, with green grassy park, wide pedway and jogging track. A few exercise steppers are installed in the park. Macau is a city that never sleeps. Even past midnight didn't stop people from working out in the park or simply jogging along the jogging track.

Another day, another plan on my mind. Morning of Macau on my feet... quite chilly and windy. And my running nose was killing me, yet I had to go around my guesthouse to grab something to eat for breakfast. I came across a small shophouse which sold Chinese food a la carte. At ordinary day, I didn't take heavy breakfast, yet it was my extraordinary day. I need lotta lotta energy to explore Macau city. One useful tip: Always buy bottled water from local groceries. Much cheaper than convenience stores as 7-11 or Circle K.

The Venetian Macau-Resort-Hotel was definitely on our list and we planned to go around on foot or public bus... so let's get lost. We walked pass the Cultural Affairs Bereau (Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E. de Macau), Macau Historical Archives and Central Library, and last but not least... the Tap Seac Gallery. Heavy downpour kept trailing us, yet wouldn't keep us from having fun and enjoying the eclectic city of Macau.

Outer Harbor Reservoir
Massive reclamation works had changed the landscape of Macau, with new districts being created by land reclamation, one being the NAPE (Novos Aterros do Porto Exterior) in the Outer Harbor. The area features the Ferry Terminal (Terminal Maritimo do Porto Exterior), an heliport... the Reservoir next to it is enclosed part of the Terminal structure as well as the adjacent Macau Grand Prix Stand.

Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau
The Cultural Affairs Bureau / Instituto Cultural di Governo da R.A.E. de Macau 澳門特別行政區政府文化局(former Cultural Institute of Macau / Macau Instituto Cultural 文化局) was founded as a public institution on 4 September 1982. Its aim was to assist in drafting and implementing the Territory's policies on culture and academic research by organizing activities relating to Sino-Portuguese cultural interchange and by disseminating and stimulating an interest in Portuguese language and culture in this part of the world.

In 1989 its Organic Statute underwent an extensive review to bring it into line with an evolving reality. The Institute continued to maintain its triple role producing draft legislation, providing training in the various arts and promoting cultural events.

Two separate departments were added, the Conservatory and the Academy of Visual Arts (which in 1993 transferred to become part of the Macau Polytechnic Institute) in addition to the Historical Archives and Central Library (previously called the National Library of Macau).

On 19 December 1994, the Institute's organic and administrative structures were again reorganized in an attempt to make these more appropriate to the needs of the transition period. This has made the Cultural Affairs Bureau more dynamic and operational in the field of cultural activities and responsive to the goals of administrative modernization and increasing localization of staff. On 20 July 1998, the Museum of Macau had become a member of the Cultural Affairs Bureau.

Tap Seac Gallery
The Tap Seac Gallery 塔石藝文館 is located at 95 Avenida do Conselheiro Almeida Ferreira.

The noble cultural venue is housed in an historic building with a European facade. The arthen-yellow and brick-red outer walls match wooden louvers, and window tracery design and the Moorish arched doors from decorated vertical elements. The two cornices on the front elevation sport parapets, and top frontispiece pediments give the building a distintly European, neo-classical flair.

This large, two-storey detached house and the buildings that surround it all date from the 1920's and make up an integral part of the Tap Seac Historic District.

The building is a typical example of an upper-class family residence in Macau. After the main house was built another building was constructed behind it. When the facility was converted to an art gallery, these building were joined together, but to preserve historic elements, the two inner walls that originally separated the two structures were left intact and in place.

Well, that's it for tour-de-Macau of the day. Now let's go back to our guesthouse, Sheng Lei Guesthouse, where we stay overnight. For accommodation, it really is shoestring budget here, Macau is a no-joke expensive city for our backpacker wallet, so we're trying to figure out how to make sure we survive this city.
